PS4 Has just been unveiled.
http://bgr.com/2013/02/20/sony-playstat ... ge-332308/
Basics: It's going to have 8 gigs of ram, a next gen CPU and badass video card that runs DDR5.
They didn't say hard drive size or show what the console looks like.
Lots of games to look forward to. I'm interested in Watchdogs, the new Final Fantasy and Blizzard's new MMO that will also be for the PS4.

I wonder what price point they'll be shooting for. PS3 bundles are $250.

Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
Yeah, but it was $599-699 range when it first came out.
It's come down considerably over the years, and this system is guessed to be really powerful, even if it's running on an AMD architecture.
We will hopefully find out tomorrow.

Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
From IGN:
A new rumor suggests that PlayStation 4 is due this November and will be available at two price points. According to Kotaku, anonymous sources say the PlayStation 4 is currently planned for two SKUs at $429 and $529 respectively, though “that could change.”
The source also suggests that “you'll also be able to control the PS4 remotely from your tablet or smartphone. You'll be able to use a mobile device to chat with your PS4 friends or buy games which are then automatically downloaded to your machine.” The second half of that rumor seems to be in line with Sony’s recent changes to the accessibility of the PlayStation Store, which expanded to browsers last month.
Finally, the source suggests “that every PS4 will come with a PlayStation Eye; that a new spectating feature will let you watch other friends play games from your console's dashboard, even when you don't own the game they're playing; and that the console will support local network play via Vita.”

I have both current consoles. The xbox I use for a media center extender and the PS3 I use for a bluray player. Will probably not get either console at least for a couple years.

Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
The PS3 as a media player is pretty great so far. I like that it doesn't cost a faggoty Xbox Live membership to do any of the online stuff, like Netflix or even fucking YouTube. For that reason alone I feel the Xbox is a poor media player.
Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
You don't have to have a membership to stream your own stuff via media center. As an internet streamer though, I agree.

I've seen many rumors that the new XBox will not play used games. That kinda sucks, if it turns out to be truth.

How exactly will the xbox tell the difference between a new retail disc, and a used retail disc? Seems like a losing proposition for Micrsoft to try and take.principessa wrote:I've seen many rumors that the new XBox will not play used games. That kinda sucks, if it turns out to be truth.
Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
I imagine each disk has a unique number on it and when you first play it you have to register it to your xbox, after which no other xbox will play it.
Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
Seems far fetched. It would absolutely obliterate the rental market.. They'll get massive pushback from companies like blockbuster, redbox, gamefly etc.Luturb wrote:I imagine each disk has a unique number on it and when you first play it you have to register it to your xbox, after which no other xbox will play it.
Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
They could still make special rental disks if they wanted to, but the game makers probably hate those companies.Jukas wrote:Seems far fetched. It would absolutely obliterate the rental market.. Re: PS4 "might" be unveiled tomorrow.
There were talks of the "new" XBox requiring internet for all devices, and it would use that internet to check the "newness" of each game. If it has been played on another device previously, it is not new, thus will not play.Jukas wrote:How exactly will the xbox tell the difference between a new retail disc, and a used retail disc? I can't see them doing it. What happens when my xbox 720 rrod and bricks my entire game library to the replacement. Or what if I have a second xbox in my condo in tahoe? suddenly I'd need a second copy of any game?Xarpolis wrote:There were talks of the "new" XBox requiring internet for all devices, and it would use that internet to check the "newness" of each game. Between that and killing the rental/used market I dont see it happening anytime soon with new games still costing $60+. Unlikely the market would support it.

You might also be pleased to see that the developers of HALO are making a PS4 title this time around.
They're making "Destiny", a new first person shooter. While this alone isn't news (it was unveiled a few days ago), it IS getting exclusive content for the PS4. So enjoy, Lawful.

I think it was a troll. Anyway...
Looks like there's an answer to the Used games and backwards compatability questions.

Playing Wii games on Wii U looks like total shit, so I support dropping backwards compatibility if it's going to be shitty and buggy.
Re: PS4 Has just been unveiled.
PS4 has a completely different processor architecture than the PS3 so the lack of backward compatibility is no surprise.

Re: PS4 Has just been unveiled.
PS1 and 2 games look great on the PS3, though. Early generation PS3's at least. They have an extra chipset inside that upgrades video quality of old titles. Really makes them appear as though they were meant to be HD. It rounds pixels and such to make things seem newer.
They removed that extra component when they changed the body style to make it a thinner playstation that consumed less power. I believe the early incarnations, like the one I have, have the same power usage as a refrigerator. They also get REALLY hot.
PS3 1st and 2nd gen.
PS3 Slim 1st gen.
PS3 Slim 2nd gen.

Re: PS4 Has just been unveiled.
I imagine it depends on the game. Some of the Wii games I've emulated on my computer were able to take full advantage of being on a computer, and looked amazing. Others just stretched to fit the high reso and looked just as much like ass as they did on the Wii.motherface wrote:Playing Wii games on Wii U looks like total shit, so I support dropping backwards compatibility if it's going to be shitty and buggy.

The beginning looked nice, then it went all generic.

Re: PS4 Has just been unveiled.
Well, games are virtually the same for any console. They were just showing off some of the advanced graphics that it will support. At least the very early early stages of "advanced" graphics.
A lot has changed with just the PS3 since it's release until now. The same will happen with the PS4. It will start off with just a little better than current gen, and then it'll be much better.
For example, Genji was a (US) release title for the PS3.
It's pretty, but it's not game changing.
